Face area, waste, then the round-up

One 6 × 6 in paver occupies 36 ÷ 144 = 0.25 sq ft, so the worked 120 sq ft patio needs 480 pavers exactly. The 10% cutting allowance lifts that to 528 — and because that lands on a whole number, the purchase is 528 pavers with none spare; odd areas round up instead. Underneath, a 1 in bedding layer is 10 cu ft = 0.37 cu yd of sand — the same area × depth arithmetic the aggregate tools use.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I enter the paver size myself?

Because there is no standard paver. 6×6, 6×9, 4×8, 12×12, and 16×16 inches are all common product lines, and even “holland” pavers vary by manufacturer — so the honest coverage figure is the one on your paver’s spec, entered as its two face dimensions. The placeholders are suggestions to get you started, not baked-in assumptions.

Do the sand joints between pavers change the count?

Barely, and in the safe direction. Paver joints are typically ⅛ inch of swept sand, not mortar beds, so this tool counts pure face area — which very slightly overstates the pavers needed. If your pattern uses wide joints, add the joint to each face dimension you enter, exactly the way the tile calculator handles grout.

How much bedding sand do I need?

The tool computes footprint × depth exactly, defaulting to a 1 inch bedding layer — a common screeding spec, but a choice you can change, because base design is your project’s call. The figure excludes the gravel base underneath, which is a separate (and usually thicker) layer — size it with the gravel calculator.

What does the 10% waste cover?

Edge cuts. Any patio with a border, curve, or diagonal pattern loses parts of pavers along the perimeter, and cut-offs are rarely reusable. 10% is the flooring-trade convention for straight lay; herringbone and circles chew more, so raise it for fancy patterns.

Can it price the whole patio?

It prices what it counts: pavers, at the per-paver price you type. Sand, gravel base, edge restraint, and labor are separate line items with their own tools or quotes — bundling them into one opaque number would hide what you are actually buying.
