Square Footage Calculator

Add a row per room or rectangle, and get each area plus the combined total in square feet, square yards, and square meters — the starting measurement for nearly every material estimate on this site.

Rooms and rectangles

Example: a 12 × 10 ft room plus an 8 × 6 ft room totals 168 sq ft.

Material planning (optional)

Enter at least one room to see the total.

The formula, spelled out

Each row is a rectangle: area = length × width, in feet, giving square feet. Rows are then summed: total = area₁ + area₂ + … For the other units, sq yd = sq ft ÷ 9 and sq m = sq ft × 0.09290304 — both exact conversions, not approximations.

A worked floor plan

A 12 × 10 ft living room is 120 sq ft; an 8 × 6 ft entry is 48 sq ft. Together: 168 sq ft, which is 18.67 sq yd or 15.61 sq m. Every number in this paragraph is computed at build time by the same engine the form uses, so the copy and the calculator cannot disagree.

Measuring so the number holds up

  • Measure wall to wall at floor level, where the material actually goes.
  • Break odd shapes into rectangles rather than estimating diagonals by eye.
  • Keep a row per room — the per-room breakdown makes rechecking one measurement easy.
  • Feeding another tool on this site? Hand the total to the flooring, tile, or mulch calculator next.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure an L-shaped or irregular room?

Split it into rectangles and enter each one as its own row. An L-shape is two rectangles; a U-shape is three. The calculator sums the rows, which is exactly how estimators measure odd footprints on site.

Do closets, hallways, and alcoves count?

Count them if the material you are planning will go there. For flooring, closets usually count; for a rug or a paint accent wall they usually do not. Add or remove rows to match what you will actually cover.

How do square feet convert to square yards and square meters?

Divide square feet by 9 for square yards (a yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 9 square feet), and multiply by 0.09290304 for square meters. Both conversions are exact definitions, and the tool shows all three units.

What is the material-planning section for?

If you already know how much area one package of your material covers, enter it (with an optional waste percentage and price) and the tool turns the room total into whole packages and an estimated cost. Leave it blank to keep this a pure measuring tool.

Measurements are processed locally in your browser and never transmitted. How every engine on this site is built and tested is documented on the methodology page.
